Target group

  • schools, gardeners, ecocenters, people interested in beekeeping

How did it all begin?

Beekeeping has a long tradition in Dávid’s family. Dávid wanted this craft to be preserved and to restore the lost tradition in his family too. While working with Soňa and Veronika, they saw that the knowledge about bees and pollination is very weak. There is a common point of view that bees are important because they give us honey, but their significance is underestimated. Up to 90% of all plants has to be pollinated by bees. The majority of our food requires the pollination, whether a fruit, vegetable, our favourite coffee or even chocolate.

This gave them an idea to found the educational experience programm for schools and general public called Jeden deň včelárom (Being a beekeeper for a day), which they offer via their civil association  kRaj (Paradise). The deeper they went, the more challenges they had to solve and, above all, to find out why beekeeping is decling. The main reasons for this is time and money.

This brought them to a new view on classical beekeeping; they brought to their educational product  also the time and price suitable products for hobbies of the beekeepers and people interested in the topic of land’s pollination. Dávid, Soňa, and Veronika want to point out that beekeeping can improve biodiversity, influence the food price, create new jobs, and help people find new purpose in their life or in the life of their community.

 Business model

The sustainability of the project is provided by the sale of the products (honey and bee products, hives, houses for insects) and services (Jeden deň včelárom (Being abeekeeper for a day) , apiculture courses). The profit from this business activity is used for co-financing of other projects of the civil association with their target in increasing the employment in the beekeeping sphere. They want to offer jobs mainly to long-term unemployed from the region, to people from various marginalized groups.

Future plans

To continue offering these products and services, BEEsiness wants to have satisfied beekeepers who will be coming back for new hives and tools, as well as schools for pupils to attend each year. This project will therefore focus on expansion of the support around the hives – more variations, new courses, new tools. There is also the establishment of the educational centre in this plan, where there would be apart from the lectures and workshops also the beekeeping exposition, glassed-in hives, dressing rooms, rest romms and a store with bee products and also regional products.

How did this grant help us?

"This grant program allowed us to professionalize our work, to prepare us " for life ". NGOs often live in a "bubble" in which they can carry out the activities that would be taken off in the corporate world, or would be significantly loss-making. We have learned to plan our activities the way they create the benefit and are done from the heart, but also bring profit," said one of last year's winner and founder of the project BEEznis, David Turčáni.

Before obtaining the grant: a non-profit organization living only on donations, with sales 50 EUR, 50 customers

Today: a non-profit entreprise with sales of 6,000 euros from the sale of theirs products (hives and design courses on beekeeping), 1800 customers

What makes  BEEznis different

  • price of BEEznis hive 80 €

  • the cost of beekeeping  300 € (current market price 75 € a 900 €)
